August OwlCrate: Something Wicked This Way Comes
Time for the August OwlCrate unboxing! The theme this month was "Something Wicked This Way Comes," and subscribers were promised creepy goodies inspired by Edgar Allen Poe, Harry Potter, Six of Crows, This Savage Song, and more. Let's see if this box delivered on this promise!
First up is a coffee sampler inspired by the Dark Arts. The packaging is beautiful, and definitely evokes the feeling of being in a Dark Arts classroom, perhaps toasting He Who Must Not Be Named with a cup o' joe. The coffee is slightly aromatic, with hints of citrus and chocolate. I'm a pretty dedicated Keurig user, but I do have reusable cups specifically for ground coffee, so I'll give this a try soon!
I was looking forward to the literary socks from Out of Print! They always have whimsical prints and I love that this pair of socks is called "Poe-ka Dots." If I'm being honest, the faces creep me out a little bit (so this fits the box theme perfectly- good going!), and i probably won't wear them. Instead, I'm going to give them to my boyfriend, who is always in search of printed dress socks to add some fun to his daily work wear.
Stickerrrrrrrr! I love me some stickers! Evie Seo is an amazingly talented illustrator and graphic artist, and I really like this sticker she came up with. The design is printed on transparent sticker paper that peels right off. I'm not sure where I'm going to stick this, but I will figure it out soon, because it'd look great on anything. My laptop, a notebook cover, the possibilities are endless!
Six of Crows double-sided bookmark, Treehouse of Books, $4.00 (est)
I couldn't find a link for this vendor, but this bookmark is very pretty! It's printed on a nice quality cardstock with vibrant colors. The quotes are easily identifiable from Six of Crows, one of my recent favorite reads, with subtle imagery.. I wish the image for the "No mourners, no funerals. Among them, it passed for 'good luck'" quote was a little darker, to fit the theme.
This additional book is definitely the gem of this month's OwlCrate. Though I couldn't find this exact copy on Rock Paper Books' site, I saw that similar anthologies go for $14.99. This book of short stories by Washington Irving is perfect for this box! I actually dragged my boyfriend to Tarrytown one summer, which inspired the Legend of Sleepy Hollow, to visit Irving's grave. Creepy nerd status much?
To be honest, I was skeptical of this pen, just because of the cheaper price and the fact that the vendor is a wholesale shop. I was pleasantly surprised by this Ooly fountain pen! It comes with black ink and two extra cartridges. The third cartridge is inside the pen, but you must manually click it in, which may be tricky for some people who aren't familiar with fountain pens. The pen writes smoothly, though it's a little runnier than I'd prefer. However, I'll definitely be using this pen until I run out of cartridges because of its convenience.
The book of the month is The Hearts We Sold, and OwlCrate subscribers received an exclusive cover! Instead of the title being in white, our copies had the title in red text. I'm not the biggest of the cover in general, so the change in text color doesn't make a huge difference for me. But for book collectors, this is a great opportunity to own a limited edition copy of a very well-received book.
When Dee Moreno makes a deal with a demon—her heart in exchange for an escape from a disastrous home life—she finds the trade may have been more than she bargained for. And becoming “heartless” is only the beginning. What lies ahead is a nightmare far bigger, far more monstrous than anything she could have ever imagined.
With reality turned on its head, Dee has only a group of other deal-making teens to keep her grounded, including the charming but secretive James Lancer. And as something grows between them amid an otherworldy ordeal, Dee begins to wonder: Can she give someone her heart when it’s no longer hers to give?
Box Total Value: $52.54
What an incredible box value! And every item in this book is practical and I can definitely see myself using them soon!
The theme next month is "Mythical Creatures," and I am so ready for a box filled with whimsical, mythical goodness! We got a sneak peek that there will be a book sleeve by Book Beau. This is such a highly sought-after item, and I'm really excited to finally own one! If you want to snag your September box, grab an OwlCrate now!
