Tempests and Slaughter: Review
What's a girl to do when she meets her literary role model and hero? An author whose worlds inspired her love of fantasy and reading about strong women? Cry, of course. That's exactly what happened when I met Tamora Pierce at New York Comic Con 2017. Random House gave out advanced reader copies of her upcoming book, Tempests and Slaughter, Book One of the Numair Chronicles. *Note: I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own!*
Arram. Varice. Ozorne. In the first book in the Numair Chronicles, three student mages are bound by fate . . . fated for trouble.
Arram Draper is a boy on the path to becoming one of the realm’s most powerful mages. The youngest student in his class at the Imperial University of Carthak, he has a Gift with unlimited potential for greatness–and for attracting danger. At his side are his two best friends: Varice, a clever girl with an often-overlooked talent, and Ozorne, the “leftover prince” with secret ambitions. Together, these three friends forge a bond that will one day shape kingdoms. And as Ozorne gets closer to the throne and Varice gets closer to Arram’s heart, Arram begins to realize that one day soon he will have to decide where his loyalties truly lie.
In the Numair Chronicles, readers will be rewarded with the never-before-told story of how Numair Salmalín came to Tortall. Newcomers will discover an unforgettable fantasy adventure where a kingdom’s future rests on the shoulders of a talented young man with a knack for making vicious enemies.
Act fast! The first printing of the hardcover includes a collector’s edition poster!
Tamora Pierce is LEGENDARY in the world of fantasy. But don't take it from me. Take it from some of these other bestselling authors:
I was so honored to hold a copy of Pierce's upcoming book, Tempests and Slaughter, in my hands. First off, this book is distinctly written for fans of her other works. We revisit familiar magic systems and travel across lands and kingdoms near and dear to our hearts. There are names that don't quite roll off the tongue too easily, but to me, they feel like old friends.
In this book, we follow primarily the journey of Arram Draper, a prodigal student at the Imperial University of Carthak. Much of the book is spent following Arram through his adolescence as he navigates his way through his studies. I actually really enjoy magic-academy-type stories, like Taran Matharu's Summoner series, so I fell in love with the journey Pierce took us through in Tempests and Slaughter! He is a character that I rooted for, being an nerd, introvert, and terribly socially awkard myself.
Pierce's writing is masterful. She has a way of crafting the perfect sentence to show everything, rather than tell you. The magic systems in this book are fully developed in a way that they almost seem realistic. There is elemental magic, healing magic, kitchen magic, battle magic, and wild magic. Not only is Tempests and Slaughter steeped in magic, but it is also rife with politics and there are some strong themes about civil rights that are tackled in a way that makes sense for a teenager like Arram.
I rate Tempests and Slaughter 4/5 stars. Tempests and Slaughter releases February 6th, 2018!
