July OwlCrate: Wanderlust

July 30, 2017

Readers, look away if you haven’t received your July OwlCrate box yet! The theme of this month’s box was “Wanderlust,” and is filled to the brim with travel-themed items. There were a few items that I absolutely loved and could see myself using, but there were some other items that felt lackluster, compared to previous books. Read on for a full unboxing!

Owl Luggage Tag, Mudpuppy, $9.97

This owl tag is pretty cute! I actually just bought a brand new suitcase that this would look great with. I’m just a little skeptical of how durable it can be, since it’s made of felt.

Newt Scamander Keychain, Funko, $6.44

This cutie was a welcome surprise in my box! New Scamander is such a lovable character, and his shenanigans abroad were incredibly fun to watch on the silver screen. It’s just a bummer that I already have a Scamander keychain, so I’ll likely just gift this to a friend.

The Lord of the Rings drawstring backpack, OwlCrate, $6 (estimated)

This drawstring backpack was created by OwlCrate and has the quote, “Home is behind, the world ahead, and there are many paths to tread through shadows to the edge of night, until the stars are all alight.” How pretty is that?! It’s so creative and I don’t have anything like this. I was never a huge fan of the color green, but I think this drawstring backpack will be great for park excursions, or trips to the dog park with my puppy.

Pocket Mirror, Miss Phi, $3.50 (estimated)

As a huge fan of V.E. Schwab’s Shades of Magic series, I was ecstatic to see an item inspired by her books in this box! It was an exclusive design by Miss Phi that reads “As Travars,” which means “To Travel,” in the books. I don’t especially use pocket mirrors, and if I’m totally honest, I wish the design were more dynamic to represent the magic of the Shades of Magic books. For example, I’m not sure what the roses on the mirror have to do with the books or the travel theme. She had an existing As Travars design that I wished she had used instead, but I always appreciate Miss Phi’s work.

Pocket Journal, Ooly, $1 (estimated)

I can always use more notebooks and I like the design on this one a lot! The interior pages are college-ruled, lined. While I don’t particularly like using lined notebooks, I really like the design on this notebook and of course, one can always use more notebooks.

Art Print, Shailey Ann Design, $8.00 (estimated)

This print is glossy and beautiful and is going straight up on my wall!

The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue, Mackenzie Lee, $13.29

Last but not least is the book of the month! The publisher worked with OwlCrate to include an exclusive cover design to our copies of The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue, by Mackenzie Lee. Instead of a green spine, we have a light blue one. I flipped through the book just to see how big the font was (am I the only one who does that?), and ended up reading the first few pages of the book! It was hard to put down, right from the get-go, and I’m so excited to dive into this book with its funny cast of characters. In addition to the book, we also received a note from the author, a signed book plate, and a map of of the characters’ road trip adventures throughout Europe! Here’s a synopsis of the book for you to check out:

Goodreads Summary:

Henry “Monty” Montague was born and bred to be a gentleman, but he was never one to be tamed. The finest boarding schools in England and the constant disapproval of his father haven’t been able to curb any of his roguish passions—not for gambling halls, late nights spent with a bottle of spirits, or waking up in the arms of women or men.

But as Monty embarks on his Grand Tour of Europe, his quest for a life filled with pleasure and vice is in danger of coming to an end. Not only does his father expect him to take over the family’s estate upon his return, but Monty is also nursing an impossible crush on his best friend and traveling companion, Percy.

Still it isn’t in Monty’s nature to give up. Even with his younger sister, Felicity, in tow, he vows to make this yearlong escapade one last hedonistic hurrah and flirt with Percy from Paris to Rome. But when one of Monty’s reckless decisions turns their trip abroad into a harrowing manhunt that spans across Europe, it calls into question everything he knows, including his relationship with the boy he adores.
